Roger Towndrow
I see teaching as dialogue that supports the formation and development of the creative process. I find the discussion that surrounds and informs a body work is important in articulating and confirming student ambitions. It can include use of source material and other references, looking at other artist’s work, exhibition contexts, use of materials and the formal elements of the work, the dynamics of size and scale, and individual working patterns. In opening up these subjects, I hope opportunities will emerge to enable the development of a personal creative voice.
Roger Towndrow studied BA Fine Art (Painting) at Camberwell School of Art, and MA Printmaking at Wimbledon School of Art, both now part of UAL. He has over 30 years experience teaching BA and MA Fine Art courses and was Head of Art at Falmouth University from 2011 until 2020.
Roger’s recent work has explored a range of subject matter through drawing. This has included imaginative landscapes, plant studies influenced by 17th century botanical illustrations, and work based on studies from nearby Tehidy woods.
Predominantly, he uses graphite and/or charcoal on paper as the vehicle for his explorations, finding that the modesty, rawness and limited nature of the medium provides a discipline and structure from which to describe a varied imaginative experience.
Roger has exhibited mainly in the UK and USA, where his work is also held in public and private collections.
