Emerging Artists Bursary

LEARN FROM PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS

How does it work

The Emerging Artists Bursary is aimed at young creatives taking their first steps into professional art practice. We would like to hear from 19-25 year old emerging artists living in Cornwall, who would benefit from additional expert tuition from professional artists. Successful applicants will be able to choose a 3 or 4 day art course of their choice at the historic St Ives School of Painting, and 80% of the fee will be covered by the bursary, up to a maximum of £340.

This has been made possible from funds supplied by the Roy Ray Legacy Fund, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust and charitable donations from students at the St Ives School of Painting.

Applicant Criteria

Applicants must be aged 19-25 and currently live in Cornwall, a proof of address will be required.

You must have an active visual art practice, be able to evidence a serious approach to your work and be aiming to develop a career in the Creative Arts.

Applications will be considered by the panel at St Ives School of Painting; decisions are final.

How to Apply

If you meet the applicant criteria, you can apply for the bursary by completing this online application and uploading a selection of your artwork. Funding is limited so not every application will be successful.

Your application will go under review and upon acceptance, you will be able to choose from a range of courses.

This bursary has a rolling deadline, the opportunity remains open until all funding is spent.

More about our funders

The Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust has been supporting people in their art studies since 1987 and have granted match funding to double the amount from Roy Ray’s Legacy Fund.

Roy Ray attended St Ives School of Painting as a student in the 1960’s and was fundamental in its success from the late 1970’s to early 2000’s. As Principal, he introduced more contemporary courses and welcomed even more visitors to the St Ives art community.

When Roy sadly passed in May 2021, he left a legacy for emerging artists, a group he believed needed a helping hand to pursue their dream, even if the odds are stacked against them.

Esteemed St Ives based Scottish artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, was a huge part of the St Ives modernist history. Throughout her long career, Barns’ Graham shared Roy Ray’s passion to support emerging artists.

Having benefitted from bursaries throughout her studies, Barns-Graham set up a Trust at the end of her life, so that her legacy could support individuals to fulfil their potential. The Trust has been supporting people in their art studies since 1987.
